Small but full of character, our Baby Opuntia is one of those plants that makes people smile the moment they see it. With its tiny paddle shaped pads and soft sculptural form, this miniature cactus brings a playful desert feel into the home without taking up much space. It is the perfect little companion for a sunny windowsill, desk, or shelf where you want something low maintenance yet full of personality.

These baby cacti are especially popular as thoughtful gifts or as a first plant for beginners. They are wonderfully forgiving, happy to quietly grow without constant attention, which makes them ideal for busy homes or anyone who tends to worry about over caring for plants. Small, resilient and undeniably cute, this is one of those plants that proves you do not need something large to make a space feel alive.

Size
W5.5cm x H10cm
Overall height: varies slightly as each plant is unique, but typically around 10cm tall.

Native habitat and growth pattern
Opuntia cacti are native to arid regions of North and South America where they grow under strong sunlight and long dry periods. In the wild, they form spreading clumps made up of flattened pads that store water, allowing them to survive drought conditions. This natural adaptation makes them extremely easy to care for indoors, especially in bright, warm rooms.

Styling tips
A Baby Opuntia works beautifully in small spaces where you want a subtle botanical touch. Try styling it on a sunny kitchen shelf, beside a laptop on a home office desk, or grouped with other mini cacti and succulents for a modern desert inspired display. It also makes a lovely addition to gifting moments when you want something simple, natural and long lasting.

Care guide
Light: Bright light is best. A sunny windowsill is ideal.
Water: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water lightly, especially in winter.
Temperature: Prefers warm indoor conditions and does not like cold, damp environments.
Soil: Free draining cactus or succulent mix is ideal.
Feeding: During spring and summer, a gentle feed every few weeks supports steady growth. We recommend our Organic Tropical Plant Food, exclusive to Happy Houseplants: https://www.happyhouseplants.co.uk/collections/houseplant-food/products/original-vegan-plant-food

Why choose this plant?
The Baby Opuntia is perfect if you want something cheerful, sculptural and genuinely easy to look after. It is ideal for beginners, busy households, or anyone wanting to add a touch of nature to smaller spaces. Because it stores water in its pads, it is far more forgiving than many leafy houseplants and thrives on a little neglect rather than too much attention.

Interesting facts

Opuntia is commonly known as the prickly pear cactus, and some species produce colourful edible fruits in the wild.

The flattened pads are actually modified stems that help the plant store water efficiently.
Cacti have evolved to open their pores at night rather than during the day to reduce water loss in hot climates.

Find Out Who Was the Legal Secretary
Format: Hardcover
I ordered this book after watching Nuremberg with Michael Shannon and Russell Crowe because I wanted to find out who was the woman accompanying Justice Jackson to Germany. Yes, that was not his wife, it was his legal secretary, Elsie Douglas. This book is the only source I could find that goes into any detail about their relationship. What it provides is nowhere near salacious, because it is evident that Jackson took his secrets to the grave. What details it does provide about the evident love triangle that existed in Jackson's life for many years is quite sufficient to explain the events of Nuremberg.

Well written. Factual sloppiness.
Format: Hardcover
Good insight into Jackson’s approach to the law. Thoroughly researched. Well written. However, Professor White made two egregious factual errors, both of which are an indication of sloppiness on his part, as well as that of his editors and peer reviewers. First, he refers to the World War 2 Chief of Naval Operations as the Secretary of the Navy. Second he states that Los Alamos National Laboratory is in California.

Judging Jackson
Format: Hardcover
Readers interested in FDR's era, the post-war Nuremberg Trial, and/or such important U.S. Supreme Court events as the Rosenberg spy case and Brown v. Board of Education will enjoy this well-researched book. Illuminating insights as to the characters of his fellow members of the High Court, especially Justices Black and Douglas, are also present. Of special interest in today's world is Justice Jackson's thinking on the limits of Executive Power in terms of war powers and foreign relations. I do think non-lawyers will be less interested when the author, a legal scholar, sometime goes into depth exploring aspects of Justice Jackson's thoughts on opaque technical areas, such as diversity jurisdiction under the constitution. And, I fail to see the need to spend much time on Justice Black's two children, as is done in chapter two "Family Matters." Why do I need to know that his daughter was a mediocre student in college or details about her early love life? Professor White clearly admires Robert H. Jackson as a fine advocate, brilliant writer, and independent judge, while noting some of his flaws. All in all, a good biography of an important American.
